Richard G. Ballantine is the chairman of the board of Ballantine Communications, which publishes The Durango Herald, the twice weekly Cortez Journal and related internet sites. BCI also publishes several telephone directories in southwest Colorado and in New Mexico. The company has been family owned since 1952.

Richard is a member of the Colorado Humanities Council and the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center board of trustees. He is a past president of the Ft. Lewis College trustees and the Colorado Press Association, and a past board member of the state Nature Conservancy, the Inland Press Association Foundation and the Florida Conservancy District.

Richard graduated from Stanford University with a degree in history and served in the U.S. Army.
