Tom G. McGonagle is a Partner in the Ares Real Estate Group at Ares Management Corporation and Senior Portfolio Manager for the Ares Industrial Real Estate Fund, a $7 billion institutional open-end fund focused on industrial warehouses and distribution facilities throughout the United States. He joined Ares in 2021 following its acquisition of Black Creek Group, where he had served as a Managing Director and helped lead the firm’s national industrial real estate platform since 2010.
Over the course of his career, Tom has held senior leadership roles across real estate, finance, investment banking, corporate development, and operating companies. Prior to Black Creek, he served in executive and advisory roles with Pinnacle Gas Resources, MacDermid, and Vistar Corporation. Earlier in his career, he was Managing Director and Co-Head of the U.S. Merchant Banking Group at Babcock & Brown in New York and spent more than a decade with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette/Credit Suisse, where he was a Managing Director in the Financial Sponsors Group.
Tom has a long history of involvement in Colorado nonprofit and educational organizations. He has served on the Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation Board for more than 20 years, including as Chair of the Investment Committee, which oversees investment assets for the hospital and Foundation. He is also a member of the Buell Foundation Board and Chair of its Development Committee, and previously served on the Kent Denver School Board for more than 15 years.
A Colorado native, Tom attended Graland Country Day School and Kent Denver School before earning a B.A. in Economics from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business.
Tom and his wife, Anne, have been married for nearly 40 years and have three daughters. They have deep ties to Colorado and are active supporters of a number of civic, cultural, educational, and community organizations.
