An attorney by trade, Katich served for fourteen years as the Director of Business Development and Government Relations in the Denver office of JE Dunn Construction Company, one of the nation's largest general contractors. He continues to represent the company as a member of several boards and organizations, including the Colorado Forum.
A Colorado resident since the 1970’s, Steve has seen first-hand the growth and progress the State has enjoyed. During his senior year of college at the University of Denver, he took a quarter off in 1974 to join the gubernatorial campaign of then candidate and soon to be Governor Dick Lamm. For six months he traveled the State with Lamm, providing Steve with a first-hand education of the various issues facing the State. He has considered himself a Coloradoan ever since.
In 1983, Denver Mayor Federico Pena appointed Steve to serve as the executive director of the Denver Baseball Commission, where he spent nearly a decade heading the City’s successful effort to bring a Major League Baseball team to Colorado. He then joined GBSM, a public policy and strategic communications firm, where he became a partner and worked for thirteen years.
Katich currently serves on the President's Community Cabinet for the Metropolitan State University of Denver and an advisory board for a leading communications firm based in Denver. He also is a member of the Colorado Consular Corps, serving since 2002 as Honorary Consul for the Republic of Serbia. Katich has served on numerous boards since coming to Colorado, including the Downtown Denver Partnership, the Denver Botanic Gardens, the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, the Colorado AIDS Project and co-chair of the Jefferson County EDC Government Affairs Committee.
Katich graduated from the University of Denver and then the George Washington University Law School. Katich is married to Ellen Jaskol, an award-winning professional photographer who won two Pulitzer Prizes at the Rocky Mountain News. He has two adult daughters, Alexandra and Helen. Alexandra is a partner at Nelson Mullins, a large national law firm where she specializes in complex corporate finance transactions. She has offices in New York City and Denver. Helen worked for more than four years for Senator John Hickenlooper in Durango, Colorado and Washington D.C. In 2025, she left the Senator's office to join the Gates Family Foundation where she serves as its Senior Program Officer for Community Development.
