Joe Wheeling is co-owner of James Ranch Grass Finished Beef and The Gardens at James Ranch in Durango, Colorado. He is also the Chairman of FastTrack Communications, a broadband provider. Joe is a consultant to Serious Texas Barbeque, a 2016 Colorado Companies to Watch winner.
Wheeling is the former Chief Executive Officer for Red Roof Inn, where he was responsible for managing the strategic direction of the brand and building a management team from scratch as Red Roof Inn transitioned from an integrated business unit under Accor’s ownership to a stand-alone company. Wheeling was instrumental in placing Red Roof Inn at the top of the economy lodging segment. From 2003 to 2009, Wheeling focused on reinventing Red Roof Inn through a $200 million national renovation program titled “Redesigned, Rededicated” that implemented award-winning Smart by Design® amenities.

Prior to the acquisition of Red Roof Inn by Citi’s Global Special Situations Group and Westbridge Hospitality Fund II, L.P. from Accor North America in September 2007, Wheeling served as Executive Vice President for Accor North America and Chief Operating Officer for Red Roof Inn. Before joining Accor in 1993, Wheeling was a Manager at Deloitte & Touche Consulting. Wheeling’s career began in commercial real estate development in Los Angeles.

He has an MBA in finance and strategic planning from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BS in Animal Science from Colorado State University. He grew up on a family ranch on the Montana – North Dakota border. He and his wife Jennifer have two daughters, Olivia and Brooke both Fountain Valley School alumni and graduates of the University of Pennsylvania and Babson College, respectively.
